Introduction

We have all experienced eye trouble at one time or another – eyes that are tired, bloodshot, burning, dry, infected, irritated, itchy, sensitive to light, or watery, to name just a few. While some eye disorders – nearsightedness or cataracts, for example – are localized problems, eye disturbances are often a sign of disease or imbalance elsewhere in the body.

Many cases of eye damage and vision loss are linked to underlying diseases or conditions. Diabetes often leads to hemorrhages in the retina and the vitreous, eventually producing blindness. Early cataracts may also be related to diabetes. High blood pressure produces a gradual thickening of the blood vessels inside the eyes that can result in visual impairment and even blindness.

Pupil dilation is an indicator of adrenal health. The adrenal glands control the sphincter muscles of the eye through sodium and potassium balance. Pupils will normally constrict with epinephrine (adrenaline) and norephinephrine release. In the case of adrenal fatigue, the pupils will actually dilate in the presence of a bright light, the opposite of healthy pupils and adrenal response.

Common Symptoms

Poor, often degenerating vision; easily strained eyes, blurring more as the day goes on; frequent headaches over the eyes; spots and floaters before the eyes; eyes that are tired, bloodshot, burning, dry, infected, irritated, itchy, sensitive to light, ulcerated, or watery.

Common Causes

Liver malfunction; environmental pollutants; allergies or food sensitivities; poor diet deficient in usable proteins and minerals, excessive in sugars and refined foods; adrenal stress and thyroid problems; serious illness; poor blood sugar control or insulin resistance; poor immune function; infection; excessive salt consumption; retinal hemorrhage; prescription and other drug abuse.

Natural Treatment

One major contributor to eye trouble is poor diet, specifically the denatured, chemical and preservative-laden foods. A deficiency in just one vitamin can lead to various eye problems. A diet rich in eye health nutrients along with supplementation of the correct vitamins and minerals can help prevent or correct eye trouble. Some of these supplements also protect against the formation of free radicals, which can damage the eyes. Working with the EB Nutrition Dietitians will help to ensure that you have the right combination of eye supportive nutrients provided by a customized diet and vitamin regimen.

Irritated eyes are a common occurrence for those of us with allergies. Building a strong immune system is pertinent for maintaining health when allergies are present. Eye problems may also be symptoms of a greater problem – food sensitivities. The majority of people suffering from seasonal and environmental allergies also have food allergies or intolerances. Determining which foods are toxic to your body with food allergy testing and an individual food allergy diet can clear up eye problems as well as other allergy symptoms.
